Let the record show that I went into this movie fully expecting it to suck. I kept expectations low, since the trailers didn't excite me. The pacing seemed all off... which is true...since the pacing of the movie is horrible. (At least they didn't have false advertising.)
The movie starts with a young logan (called James) in bed due to being quite ill. An intruder comes into the house and kills his father, prompting the young lad to pop his (bone!) claws for the first time and kill the prowler, who is revealed to be his 'real' father. The now distraught boy and his brother (a young Sabertooth) run off togther, determined to stay by each other's side.
The opening credit sequence is pretty cool, which is a montage that shows the two brothers fighting side by side in major battles throughout history. (Wolverine has a very slow aging process due to his healing factor, but this isn't made expresssly clear in the film). I thought the sequence went a *bit* too long, though.
Which leads me the the main problem of the film: it feels too long and drawn out. For a film about someone who has a trademarked "Berserker Rage"... it's rather boring. There's like ten minutes of standing and talking to every two minutes of action. Especially in this type of film, this is just unforgivable.
Some of the slower scenes are done well, and I'm glad that they took the time to develop the character. After all, action without an emotional base is useless. What's NOT cool, is that there's SO MUCH talking that you start to wonder if you're in the right theatre. Am I in 'Wolverine' or "Driving Miss Daisy'?
There are also huge sections of the movie without a score. Now, I'm all for dropping out the sound to heighten the tension of a film, but there's a difference between intesne and BORING. If a scene is so long that I *notice* how long the scene is (and the fact that there's no music in the background) that's a problem. This 107 minute film should have been 70 minutes long, 75 tops.
The action (when action finally shows up) is brief and unsatisfying. As awesome as it was to see Gambit (one of my favourite characters ^_^), he isn't used NEARLY long enough in the film. Let him chill there for a while and throw some cards! That's what people are coming to see! What we get is very limp, and the fight with Gambit is over barely after it starts.
The film gets progressively worse: the first third is well done (if a little padded), the second third is ...okay... and the last third is a ridiculously awful mish-mash of several storylines running at once to wrap the story up. I don't know what actually happened, but the end of the movie feels like they just shot a bunch of stuff, and then said, "Um...let's just put this stuff together to make the ending." WEAK. Also, there's a line said near the end of the film that was so bad it brought groans from the audience, much like Halle Berry's line from the first X-Men film, "What happens to a frog when it gets struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else." Wackest. Line. Ever.
It feels like the first X-Men movie in many ways, as if they're still figuring out how to tell this story. 'X-2: X-Men United' is one of my favourite movies, so it really feels like a step backwards to see such horrible treatment to such a cool character.
What surprised me was how good Sabertooth was. He's great in this, and doesn't look corny or as hokey as I thought he was going to look. Wolverine is good as well and there are moments of coolness, but they are too few and far between.
As theaters gear up for the summer season, this should have been a thundering gunshot that the "big, cool" movies have arrived. Instead, it's an impotent sigh, barely worthy of being mentioned...and hopefully soon forgotten.
Final Verdict: C-
Have you seen it? Agree? Disagree? Let me know!
I'm crossing my fingers for 'Star Trek'. (I REALLY hope it doesn't suck. *please, please, please*)
That's all for now. Hope you're doing well! Much love!

One note though dude - maybe could've done with a spoiler warning in the title. I had to skip sections of your review just in case. I know most people will know the synopsis by now but for those that don't...

There is a fine line between imagination and reality, let's just say I'm the blur.
For a fan, who knows the story, read hundreds of comics, well... It's missing a hell of a things, it's an empty shell with a nice bits and pieces at the bottom.
I'm waiting now for a collectors edition of a DVD - I hope there will be more to see then, as on the trailer there are scenes missing in the movie. So my guess is that it was re-done to "fit" the young audience.
On the scale 1-9 I would give it 7 only because I was waiting for this movie ages and make mine marvel!
btw. Stay in the cinema to after the credits, as at the very end there's special scene with Wolvie!

"No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to." - Neo and Morpheus, The Matrix
For Wolvie - I shall wait the dvd. I'm dead sure my dad will buy it - but if I follow your critique, I might end up like with the Dark Knight : I get it's a real movie but what the fuck have you done ppl !!
