Star Trek was directed by J. J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. This is the eleventh (wow!) film in the Star Trek franchise and has the characters from the original series (so no Picard here). The story shows how the crew comes together and their first expeditions into space.
I knew it was a remake of the of the original series, but I guess I didnt know how close they were going to stick to the source material. I mean, from the first shot of the film when the familiar sounds of the red alert hits you know youre watching a Star Trek movie.
Star Trek is by no means a bad movie. In fact, I thought it was excellent. The acting is solid and convincing. The script is succinct, full of wit and a joy to watch unfold on screen. The music (which is especially important to me) is epic without being overbearing, which is a difficult balance. The young cast is fun to watch and soon became a game of Whos going to show up next? The action is intense and satisfying (unlike the craptastic Wolverine: [link] ). I especially liked the two male leads: Chris Pine does an awesome job as the womanizing James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto does a fantastic job as the logical/emotionally tormented Spock.
However as awesome as all of this stuff was, I left the theatre feeling a little unfulfilled. As great as the movie was, I was expecting a little more. Its like it gave me 85% of an A+ movie, and then just kinda gave up.
For example, the scenes with the Romulans are the worst parts of the movie. They just don't have the momentum the rest of the film has. It starts to feel like a villain of the week kinda thing. Also, I dont know what they were thinking, but the face on the screen stuff is just corny to me now. The teleportaion was completely redone and looks much cooler now, so why this issue wasnt addressed, I dont know. Also, theyve been playing the same red alert siren since 1966. Its starting to feel a little dated. Its cool to see beloved characters reborn in young actors, but they need to get rid of some of the old fluff that only trekkies would love.
I was expecting a whole reimagining of the Star Trek universe. I excitedly looked forward to seeing it and thinking, Wow! This aint your Dads Star Trek! What I got, however, was basically the exact same universe with new actors. It starts to feel like just more of the same. The parts of the movie that work best are when theyre not trying to cram in all the Star Trek stuff from back in the day. If you can believe it, it was a bit too much Star Trek for me (and I *like* the original series). This movie plays more like a bridge movie between the old generation and the new, not the spectacular New Star Trek that I thought it was going to be. With $33 Million grossed on Friday alone, and $74 predicted for the weekend, a sequel seems obvious. I hope with the next film they can boldly go where no one has gone before a smart, well-written sci-fi movie with mass appeal (and heart
Final Verdict: B (go see it, it's good! ^_^ )
What do YOU think? Let me know!
Thats all for now. Hope youre doing well. Much love!
